Ethiopia's coffee exports have reached an unprecedented $2 billion in the 2024/25 fiscal year, surpassing all previous records and reinforcing the country's position as Africa's top coffee producer and the world's fifth-largest exporter.
The Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA) attributed the record to increased global demand for specialty Ethiopian coffees, improved processing standards, and favorable international prices. Export volume reached 350,000 metric tons.
Sidama, Yirgacheffe, and Guji specialty coffees commanded premium prices on international markets, with some lots fetching over $8 per pound at auction. The growing global appreciation for Ethiopian single-origin coffees has driven a 25% increase in specialty exports.
The government has invested heavily in coffee quality improvement programs, establishing 45 new coffee processing centers equipped with modern washing and drying facilities. These investments have significantly improved the consistency and quality of Ethiopian coffee exports.
