Ethio Telecom's telebirr Reaches 50 Million Users

Ethio Telecom has announced that its mobile money platform, telebirr, has surpassed 50 million registered users, making it one of the fastest-growing mobile money services in Africa.

Launched in May 2021, telebirr has transformed financial inclusion in Ethiopia, providing millions of unbanked citizens with access to digital financial services for the first time. The platform processes over $2 billion in transactions monthly.

The milestone was celebrated at a ceremony in Addis Ababa attended by government officials and industry leaders. Ethio Telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamiru highlighted the platform's role in driving Ethiopia's digital economy forward.

"telebirr has become more than a payment platform — it's a gateway to economic participation for millions of Ethiopians," Tamiru said. "We are now expanding our ecosystem to include lending, insurance, and investment services."

The company plans to integrate telebirr with regional payment systems across East Africa, enabling cross-border remittances and payments. Partnerships with international money transfer operators are expected to be announced in the coming months.

telebirr has genuinely changed how we handle money in Ethiopia. Hope they improve the app stability.
