The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) has announced a comprehensive $200 million digital transformation program aimed at modernizing its banking infrastructure and expanding digital services to its 40 million customers.
The five-year program includes the deployment of a new core banking system, expansion of mobile and internet banking platforms, implementation of AI-powered customer service tools, and the rollout of 2,000 new smart ATMs across the country.
CBE President Abie Sano outlined the vision at the annual banking conference. "Digital transformation is not optional — it's essential for serving our growing customer base efficiently and competitively," he said.
The program will also focus on cybersecurity enhancements, data analytics capabilities, and the development of open banking APIs to enable fintech partnerships. CBE plans to launch a dedicated innovation lab in Addis Ababa.
