Agriculture remains the backbone of Ethiopia's economy, employing over 70% of the population and contributing significantly to GDP and export earnings. The sector's transformation from subsistence farming to a modern, export-oriented industry is one of the most important economic stories in Africa today.
Coffee, Ethiopia's most famous export, has reached $2 billion in annual exports. But the story goes beyond coffee. Sesame, flowers, fruits, and vegetables are increasingly finding international markets. Ethiopia is now Africa's second-largest flower exporter.
The key challenges remain: fragmented land holdings, limited mechanization, inadequate cold chain infrastructure, and vulnerability to climate change. Addressing these requires sustained public and private investment.
The government's agricultural transformation agenda, supported by the Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Institute, has shown promising results. Productivity improvements in key crops, expanded irrigation, and better market linkages are making a difference.
